COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY & EXPOSURE THERAPY

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is at the core of our practice. What is CBT? CBT involves two approaches. First, Cognitive Therapy (CT) helps people to note and challenge faulty thinking patterns and beliefs. Instead of taking all thoughts as truths, CT suggests that it is wise not to believe everything you think. In addition, CBT involves Behavioral Therapy (BT), which is focused on changing one’s actions.

The BT used in treatment varies from one disorder to the next. For instance, with OCDAnxiety Disorders, and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the BT of choice. For Depression, on the other hand, Behavioral Activation is the focus.

There are a number of distinct subtypes of CBT. For Eating Disorders, treatments include Enhanced CBT (CBT-E) and the CBT-influenced Intuitive Eating. Cognitive-Behavioral approaches to BFRBs include The Comprehensive Behavioral Model of Treatment (ComB) & Habit Reversal Training (HRT). Prolonged Exposure (PE) is another type of CBT approach used to treat trauma. What’s more, research shows that all of these subtypes of CBT are effective in helping people to overcome their disorders.

MINDFULNESS & ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY

Mindfulness and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) are part of the most recent third wave of CBT. Research has found both to support the treatment of a wide range of disorders. Therapists at the Center for the Obsessive Mind use mindfulness and meditation in her work with Clients. We also use ACT and its focus on values to support Clients in their quest for recovery and their creation of a fulfilling life.
